FOURTEEN

Tucker is standing next to an unfamiliar white sedan when I arrive at the house. I pull in behind him, still processing my visit with Darren and why I’m here.

“Hi.” He walks toward me as I get out of my car. “I’m glad you came. I’ve been worried.”

“I know.” I force a smile, not wanting him to worry. I want so badly to believe that nothing has changed and that I didn’t push him away last night.

I glance at the sedan. “Is something wrong with your car?”

“No.” He shoves his hands into his pockets, and I catch the fatigue in his eyes. “Long story, but it’s my father’s.”

The awkwardness is still there between us. A part of me wants to jump into an explanation of everything that happened this morning. That I sent my kids out of town. That I went to see Darren. That I was followed, but certain I lost my tail. I press my lips together. No. Not yet. Right now needs to be about Tucker. Not me.

“We can talk later,” I say. “Right now, we need to see if this place triggers any more memories.”

“Are you sure?” he asks, shutting my door for me. “We have time.”

My friend and realtor, Jamie Emerson, pulls into the driveway, and I start down the sidewalk to introduce her to Tucker.

“We’ve been friends since junior high,” I tell him, still wearing my fake smile as she gets out of the car. “And then someone decided to move away.”

“I honestly can’t imagine living anywhere else now.” Jamie’s grin widens as she gives me a big hug. She hasn’t changed a bit—vibrant and all put together with her pantsuit, manicured nails, and perfectly styled shoulder-length hair.

I glance away and manage to catch my reflection in her car window. Jeans, a sweatshirt, tennis shoes, and a ponytail.

Anything but all together.

“Riley explained to me why you wanted to see the house,” Jamie said to Tucker, interrupting my thoughts. “I’m really sorry about your brother.”

“Thank you. I appreciate that.” Tucker’s voice is somber. “It’s been twenty-five years, which seems like forever. A part of me has accepted that we’ll never know what happened to Wyatt, but when I saw the photograph. . .I don’t know. It triggered something.”

“I hope coming here helps jog your memory.” Jamie pulls something out from the front seat of her car. “I’m also hoping to find someone who can restore it like many of the old houses in the area. With a little imagination, you can see how beautiful this place once was.”

“Thanks so much for coming out and letting us see it,” I say. “I know you’re busy.”

“Of course.” She hands Tucker a piece of paper. “I brought you one of the flyers for the house. The front and back doors are already unlocked. Just take your time and let me know when you’re done. I’ll be in my car making some calls.”

I thank her then follow Tucker across the lawn. Like many of the older homes in
